Empowering Black and Racially Minoritised organisations through transformative funding and support

what is the pheonix way?

The Phoenix Way is a community-led, national partnership initiative in the UK focused on addressing structural inequalities and improving socio-economic outcomes for Black and Racially Minoritised communities (BRM). It aims to transform philanthropy, grant-making and social investment so that funding is more equitable, inclusive, and community-led.

  • Inclusive North is the Northwest Regional Lead Partner and delivers The Pheonix Way work within Lancashire. 
  • One Knowsley is a subregional partner delivering in Cheshire and Merseyside
  • GMECN is a subregional partner delivering in the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester

Mission & Vision

The core mission of The Phoenix Way is to:


  • Create equity in philanthropy and social investment by radically investing in Black & racially minoritised voluntary and community organisations. 
  • Empower communities to drive systemic change and dismantle structural racism through funding, leadership development, and support infrastructure. 
  • Develop a pioneering, replicable model for fairer distribution of funding and long-term community empowerment. 


Their work is grounded in values of restorative justice, racial equity, community leadership, and systems-level change. 

How is it funded?

The Phoenix Way operates a grant programmes designed to support grassroots organisations led by Black and racially minoritised communities. 


It emphasises flexible, community-responsive funding that helps organisations to better serve their communities. 


Example data from the site shows:

  • 138 Grant Holders supported. 
  • £6.5m invested in grantees. 
  • 5 Funding Rounds completed. 


From 2025, The National Lottery has committed to ring-fencing £50m over the next five years for the Pheonix Way, to benefit Black and Racially Minoritised communities.

We have a plan to deliver

How we will deliver

Our aim is to deliver the following across the North West & with Greater Manchester.


  • Identify Black & Racially Minoritised community organisations
  • Map these organisations needs
  • Shape the grant-making process 
  • Identify areas of systemic discrimination
  • Influence change by breaking down barriers and inequalities
  • Establish a strategic group
  • Facilitate and manage regional grant assessment panels
  • Facilitate networking events
  • Bridge the gap between funders and community organisations 

We want to create lasting change

  Transforming the relationship between funders and Black & ethnic minoritised communities

 

Tackling systemic race inequalities

  Creating learning and impact that influences the wider funding ecosystem for BRM communities and organisations. 

  Driving transformational change at both regional and national levels using a racial equity and social justice lens 

  Developing shared leadership that invests in these communities and empowers them to make decisions about funding priorities and allocations
